Resumo: Madame Bovary, the famous novel by Gustave Flaubert, had a circulation and reception in nineteenth-century in Brazil that can only be properly understood if it is related to the transformation of the evaluation criteria of novels that was operating mainly at the end of that century, and the consolidation of the novel as a genre in our country. In this work, we aim to investigate, through research of primary sources, the role of the press, booksellers and critics in this trajectory
