Resumo: The long period of slavery adopted by Brazil, as well as the atrocities practiced and experienced - even after the rupture of the official slave system - are not exhausted themes in Brazilian fiction; quite the opposite, uncomfortable silences hang over these events. Silence that is not imposed by the fact that they are not treated in national literature, but, mainly, because few people directly involved in these historical moments had a voice. The work Quarto de despejo: diário de uma favelada (1960), by Carolina de Jesus, is a cry translating an undermined memory. In the work of the author, black and living in a slum, the traces of the past are narrated in the present daily life of a life marked by social exclusion, by the erasure of the slavery gesture and its silent survival.
