Resumo: This essay produces an interpretation of Macunaíma (1928), by Mário de Andrade, by means of Flávio de Carvalho’s theory on the cult of hero presented on the series “The Cats from Rome / Notes for the Reconstruction of a Lost World” (1957/1958). Carvalho suggests that, rather than an ideal, the hero is a double, which contrasts with the model of intellectual for Andrade. Following a similar line as Roger Caillois (Man, Play, Games,1958), Carvalho denies the identification of the hero with the ‘ego ideal’ by Sigmund Freud, by transforming such figure into a mask which shifts the being’s symmetry.
