Resumo: Analysis of “Negrinha”, a short-story by Monteiro Lobato, comparing it to “Sleepy” by Anton Chekhov and “The child-who-was-tired” by Katherine Mansfield. In addition to their genre, other aspects that bring them closer are the representation of violence against children, of fantasy as essential to childhood, and of child labour. From the analysis of Bignotto (1999), we seek to bring Lobato’s short-story closer to those of the other two writers, who also found radical solutions for the fictional representation of childhood, violence and fantasy. The differences among such stories seem to be significant to the comprehension of childhood and other social issues in Brazilian culture at a time of social transformation.
