Resumo: The Portuguese occupation of Africa began in the 14th century, being the slave trade one of its purpose. From this interaction a imaginary of its own was built, that appears in some poetic works since the 16th century. Three of these are examinated: Jerônimo Corte Real’s epic, O naufrágio e lastimoso sucesso da perdição de Manuel de Sousa Sepúlveda, Eça de Queirós’ novel A ilustre casa de Ramires, and Manuel Sousa Tavares’ novel, Equador.
