Resumo: In this work the mean behavior of atmosphere preceding and during snowfall events was investigated. Furthermore, anomalous fields correlated to snowfall events related to an atmospheric base state were quantified. To accomplish this task, a snowfall event sample was generated from weather reports provided by surface meteorological stations maintained by the Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia (INMET) and the Centro de Informações de Recursos Ambientais e Hidrológicos de Santa Catarina (Ciram), linked to the Empresa de Pesquisa Agropecuária e Extensão Rural de Santa Catarina (Epagri). The present study comprises the period between 1979 and 2015, where 196 snowfall events were found. To represent the atmospheric fields, ERA-Interim reanalysis data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (0:75_ _ 0:75_ grid spacing at 00 UTC and 12 UTC) were employed. Mean sea-level pressure, thickness between 1000 hPa - 500 hPa, 1000 hPa - 850 hPa, relative humidity, specific humidity and temperature at 850 hPa level, geopotential height and wind speed at 850 hPa, 500 hPa and 200 hPa levels were analyzed. Overall, snowfall occurrence in southern Brazil is associated with a transient baroclinic disturbance identified, mainly, by an anomalous dipole in the geopotential height and wind fields. The snowfall events take place after the displacement of a cold front over southern Brazil. On the days preceding the events, an anticyclone, which crosses the Andes Mountain Range from the Pacific Ocean, moves into southern South America. This anticyclone has a pronounced ridge that ensures equatorward flow, advecting cold air into southern Brazil. Because of the fast atmospheric cooling in southern Brazil, associated with cold advection, relative humidity does not exhibit decreases on the day before and on the first day of snowfall, even with a reduction in the atmospheric water vapor content.

Além disso, foram quantificados os campos anômalos associados a eventos de neve, em relação ao estado básico da atmosfera. Para realizar esta tarefa, uma amostra com registros de eventos de neve foi construída a partir de dados do Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia (INMET) e do Centro de Informações de Recursos Ambientais e Hidrológicos de Santa Catarina (Ciram), vinculado à Empresa de Pesquisa Agropecuária e Extensão Rural de Santa Catarina (Epagri). Estes dados consistem em observações meteorológicas de estações convencionais de superfície. O estudo abrange o período entre os anos de 1979 e 2015, onde foram encontrados 196 eventos de precipitação de neve. Para caracterizar a atmosfera, tanto em seu comportamento médio no período do estudo (estado básico) como para os eventos de neve, foram empregados os dados de reanálise ERA-Interim disponibilizados pelo European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. A resolução horizontal dos dados utilizados foi de 0; 75 0; 75 , nos horários sinóticos das 00 UTC e 12 UTC. As variaveis analisadas foram pressão reduzida ao nível do mar (PRNM) e espessura da atmosfera nas camadas entre 1000 hPa - 500 hPa e 1000 hPa - 850 hPa, umidade relativa, umidade especifica e temperatura no nível de 850 hPa, componentes zonal, meridional e magnitude do vento nos níveis de 850 hPa, 500 hPa e 200 hPa. De forma geral, a ocorrência de precipitação de neve na região sul, está associada ao avanço de um distúrbio baroclínico migratório identificado, principalmente, por um dipolo anômalo nos campos de altura geopotencial e velocidade do vento. Os eventos de neve ocorrem após a passagem de uma frente fria na região de estudo. Nos dias anteriores aos eventos, um anticiclone, que atravessa a cordilheira dos Andes do Oceano Pacífico, se desloca para o sul da América do Sul. Este anticiclone tem associado a si uma crista pronunciada que favorece o escoamento meridional de sul, transportando ar frio para a região de estudo. Em função do rápido resfriamento da atmosfera na região Sul do Brasil, em função da advecção de temperatura, a umidade relativa não apresenta decréscimo no dia anterior e durante o primeiro dia do evento, mesmo com a redução do teor de umidade na atmosfera.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPESporUniversidade Federal de Santa MariaCentro de Ciências Naturais e ExatasPrograma de Pós-Graduação em MeteorologiaUFSMBrasilMeteorologiaAttribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 Internationalhttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessPrecipitação de neveNeve no sul do BrasilCondições sinóticas para neveSnowfallSnow in southern BrazilSynoptic conditions for snowfallCNPQ::CIENCIAS EXATAS E DA TERRA::GEOCIENCIAS::METEOROLOGIACaracterísticas médias da circulação atmosférica em eventos de neve no sul do BrasilMean characteristics of atmospheric patterns for snowfall in southern Brazilinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesisPuhales, Franciano Screminhttp://lattes.cnpq.br/7752837354645381Boiaski, Nathalie Tissothttp://lattes.cnpq.br/8599135403486788Nascimento, Ernani de Limahttp://lattes.cnpq.br/1074092256181192Fuentes, Márcia Vetromillahttp://lattes.cnpq.br/2092565200233443http://lattes.cnpq.br/1057287144196607Mintegui, Jéssica Melo100700300004600bfe1629b-258d-4913-a676-7b38e571a04bb8c9a2fc-629b-47a1-a278-35fadf6b9766687bc8d9-3357-42db-8df5-2decad226533eae45577-51ca-404b-b1c6-5ab41470f93ce518571b-640f-4476-b6c0-95a09b55f512reponame:Manancial - Repositório Digital da UFSMinstname:Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (UFSM)instacron:UFSMCC-LICENSElicense_rdflicense_rdfapplication/rdf+xml;
