University extension in environmental awareness in schools of education basic

Environmental awareness of population management strategies has proved to be of fundamental importance for the preservation of natural resources. Environmental education activities stimulate the reduction of uncontrolled waste generation, degradation and contamination of the environment, improving the socio-environmental relations. Thus, viewing the formation of a sustainable identity in primary school students, we started university extension activities with the aim of spreading environmental awareness through sustainable practices such as composting, rainwater reuse, growing organic vegetables and appropriate separation solid waste. The work was carried out with students from three schools of the catchment area of UFSM - Campus Frederico Westphalen: Escola Estadual de Ensino Médio Cardeal Roncalli, Instituto Estadual de Educação Madre Tereza e Escola Estadual de Ensino Fundamental Waldemar Sampaio Barros. The results show awareness through the practices carried out in schools, and the students' knowledge gain. There was a significant decrease in solid waste generation, and also to obtain large amount of organic compound, from work with composting in schoolyards involved in the project. We also emphasize the use of organic compound in the construction of gardens, which subsequently delivered healthy vegetables, available in school meals.
