Resumo: In formal education, environmental complexity makes room for a non-linear interdisciplinary perspective, favoring dialogue amongst different areas of knowledge. The study proposed to investigate conceptions about mathematics and environmental issues related to the local reality, presented from the patterns and behaviors of students of the 6th and 9th grades of elementary school II (ensino fundamental II). The research uses a quantitative approach and exploratory character. The data collection instrument was a structured questionnaire applied to 88 students of an elementary school II unit, located in an Environmental Protection Area (APA), on the North Coast of the State of Bahia. The methodological proposal for detecting the behaviors and/or patterns shown by the students consisted of questions of socio-environmental nature correlated with the local community, in order to understand the students' environmental awareness of general and local environmental issues. The students have a positive outlook when they consider the fact that linking environmental issues to mathematics will likely contribute to a better understanding of the world. For 93% of 6th grade students and 100% of 9th grade students, everyone is responsible for taking care of the environment (No = 4; x = 1.091; Yes = ± 0.494). Thus, it is noted the importance of continuing studies on the proposed objective not only for monitoring, but also for the applicability in the empirical field.
