Between “Two Worlds”: The Living Experience of the CODA

Resumo: | The initials CODA were made to designate the children of deaf adults, an abbreviation form to the term in english “children of deaf adults”. Those are people that move between “two worlds”, they live their experiences in the deaf world in their relationships with the deaf culture and the deaf community. Also, when they communicate using sign language at the same time they live with the habits, people and languages of the hearing world that exert a possible cultural mediation in these communities. The objective of this article is to understand the living world (Lebenswelt) of the CODA subject that lives with distinct characteristics, inside the hearing world and the deaf world. This research is qualitative, it reveals aspects related to the reality of the subjects and their social relations, addressing identity and cultural issues. Based on the phenomenological method, inspired by Merleau-Ponty, in the period of february until june 2019, we conducted a data collection and its analysis based on semistructured interviews with four CODA participants. The data analysis was made based on the following steps: Native text division; descriptive analysis and “leaving the parenthesis”. It was established as categories for analysis: the responsibility of being CODA and the experience between two worlds. It is understood that the experience before the living world of a CODA is crossed both by a common place of being CODA as by a singular experience. It was concluded that there is no way to separate the experience lived by the CODA subject in a hearing world and the deaf world, because he exists between these two worlds. |

Son personas que transitan entre “dos mundos”, experimentando sus vivencias en el mundo sordo, al relacionarse con la cultura y comunidad sorda y al comunicarse con las lenguas de señas, a un mismo tiempo en que conviven con las costumbres, pueblos y lenguas del mundo oyente, ejerciendo una posible mediación cultural frente a estas comunidades. Este artículo intenta comprender el mundo vivido (el Lebenswelt) del sujeto CODA que vive con características diferentes y está inmerso en el mundo oyente y en el mundo sordo. Este estudio es de naturaleza cualitativa, enfatizando aspectos relacionados con la realidad del sujeto y las relaciones sociales de él, abordando cuestiones culturales e identitarias. Desde una perspectiva del método fenomenológico, inspirado en Merleau-Ponty, en el período de febrero a junio de 2019, fueron realizadas la colecta de informaciones y su análisis a través de entrevistas semiestructuradas con cuatro participantes CODA. El análisis de los datos ha seguido los siguientes pasos: División del texto nativo; Análisis descriptivo y “Salir de los paréntesis”. Se establecieron las siguientes categorías para el análisis: la responsabilidad de ser CODA y la experiencia entre los dos mundos. Se entiende que la experiencia frente al mundo vivido del CODA es atravesada tanto por un lugar común de ser CODA, como por una experiencia singular. Concluimos que no hay manera de separar la experiencia del sujeto CODA en mundo oyente y en mundo sordo, pues él se constituye entre estos dos mundos.A sigla Coda foi criada para nomear os filhos ouvintes de pais surdos, uma abreviação para o termo em inglês “child of deaf adults”. São pessoas que transitam entre "dois mundos", vivendo suas experiências no mundo surdo, ao relacionar-se com a cultura e comunidade surda e comunicar-se com línguas de sinais, ao mesmo tempo que convive com costumes, povos e línguas do mundo ouvinte, e que exercem uma possível mediação cultural diante dessas comunidades. Este artigo tem como objetivo compreender o mundo vivido (Lebenswel) do sujeito Coda, que vive com características distintas, imerso no mundo ouvinte, e o mundo surdo. Este estudo é de cunho qualitativo, relevando aspectos voltados à realidade do sujeito e suas relações sociais, abordando questões culturais e identitárias. A partir do método fenomenológico, inspirado em Merleau-Ponty, no período de fevereiro a junho de 2019, foram realizadas a coleta de informações e sua análise a partir de entrevistas semiestruturadas com quatro participantes Codas. A análise dos dados seguiu os seguintes passos: divisão do texto nativo; análise descritiva e “sair dos parênteses”. Foram estabelecidas como categorias para análise: a responsabilidade de ser Coda e a experiência entre os dois mundos. Entende-se que a experiência diante do mundo vivido do Coda é atravessada tanto por um lugar comum de ser Coda, quanto por uma experiência singular.
