The subjective dimensions of the assessment of individuals with intellectual disabilities

Resumo: This article addresses the assessment of intellectual disability, stressing the path that people with this characteristic experience to find answers to questions relevant to their atypical development. It is intended to identify and analyze the subjective dimensions in the construction of clinical judgment in the diagnostic process of the individual with intellectual disability, considering the recommendations of the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (2021). The methodology of this research is inspired by the principles of Qualitative Epistemology. Nine professionals who work in the special education and health service networks of a municipality with more than 500 thousand inhabitants, located in a region of the interior of Brazil, participated in this study. The analysis of the results is based on the cultural-historical perspective. It is concluded that clinical judgments were based on the deficit perspective, although the social dimension was highlighted by the participants, such as the need for dialogue with the relatives of people with disabilities. Despite the changes that have occurred in the conception of intellectual disability, in an effort to add social and cultural limits to the organic ones, as exposed by the AAIDD (2021), the evaluations tangencied these aspects and prioritized the behavioral characteristics of the individuals, reaffirming the metric fetish to ensure the validity of the diagnoses.

Pretende identificar y analizar las dimensiones subjetivas en la construcción del juicio clínico en el proceso de diagnóstico del individuo con discapacidad intelectual, considerando las recomendaciones de la American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (2021). La metodología de esta investigación se inspira en los principios de la Epistemología Cualitativa. Participaron de este estudio nueve profesionales que actúan en las redes de educación especial y de servicios de salud de un municipio con más de 500.000 habitantes, localizado en una región del interior de Brasil. El análisis de los resultados se basa en la perspectiva histórico-cultural. Se concluyó que los juicios clínicos se basaban en la perspectiva del déficit, aunque los participantes destacaron la dimensión social, como la necesidad de diálogo con los familiares de las personas con discapacidad. A pesar de los cambios ocurridos en la concepción de la discapacidad intelectual, en un esfuerzo por agregar los límites sociales y culturales a los orgánicos, según lo establecido por la AAIDD (2021), las evaluaciones tocaron estos aspectos y priorizaron las características conductuales de los individuos, reafirmando el fetiche métrico para garantizar la validez de los diagnósticos.Este artigo aborda a avaliação da deficiência intelectual, tensionando o percurso que as pessoas com esta característica vivenciam para encontrarem respostas às questões pertinentes ao seu desenvolvimento atípico. Pretende-se Identificar e analisar as dimensões subjetivas na construção do julgamento clínico no processo de diagnóstico do indivíduo com deficiência intelectual, considerando as recomendações da Associação Americana de Deficiência Intelectual e Desenvolvimento (2021). A metodologia desta pesquisa inspira-se nos princípios da Epistemologia Qualitativa. Participaram deste estudo 09 profissionais que atuam nas redes de serviço de educação especial e de Saúde de um município com mais de 500 mil habitantes, localizado em uma região do interior do Brasil. A análise dos resultados fundamenta-se na perspectiva cultural-histórica. Conclui-se que os julgamentos clínicos eram pautados na perspectiva do déficit, embora, a dimensão social fosse destacada pelos participantes, como a necessidade de interlocução com os familiares das pessoas com deficiências.
