This study aims at studying the documents classification at Universidade Federal de Santa Maria by analyzing the classification plan of each undergraduation course focusing at a possible standardization in what refers to the vocabulary used to designate the series, sub series and documental type. Classification is an archivistic function that is considered matrix among the others, being of prime importance to records management because it helps in the information efficient retrieval and reflects the Institution functions and activities. This work lists the documental types which are part listed in a table where it shows and conceptualizes the documental species, the documental types found in the classification plans and it suggests the denomination to be used (vocabulary). It is a descriptive and qualitative research with a case study approach and documental research because it focuses the document classification plans for analysis and comparison. As a result it shows the possibility to adopt management instruments standardization at UFSM and, it proposes a document classification plan that was elaborated introducing the controlled vocabulary to be implanted at all undergraduation courses from the Institution. The research contributes for the attainment of the objectives proposed for the UFSM Archive System, inserting the document management process in the scientific perspective of Archivistics.
