Resumo: The aim of this randomized clinical trial that used comparison groups as a control history was to evaluate the effect of dentifrices containing stannous fluoride compared to sodium monofluorophosphate at different frequencies of oral hygiene and to determine which of these frequencies of plaque removal generates change in gingival inflammatory status. Eligible subjects (15% maximum of bleeding on probing) underwent a pre-trial period in order to remove factors that could interfere with plaque control and to achieve gingival health (5% maximum of bleeding on probing). For each dentifrice, fifty-two subjects were randomized into four groups according to the frequency of oral hygiene: 12h, 24h, 48h, and 72h. The plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI) and gingival crevicular fluid volume (GCF) were assessed at baseline, 15 and 30 days. The primary outcome was the difference between the dentifrices evaluated through the mean GI, the secondary outcome was to determine which frequencies are compatible with the maintenance of IP and GCF values throughout the experimental period. There was observed no statistically difference between toothpastes for any of the oral hygiene frequencies assessed. Oral Hygiene at frequencies of 12 and 24h were able to maintain stable PI ,GI and GCF scores throughout the trial period; other frequencies (48 and 72h) showed that after 15 days PI, GI and GCF scores significant rises and stay elevated up to 30 days. Thus we can conclude that the dentifrice containing stannous fluoride provides similar results to the one containing sodium monofluorophosphate at all frequencies evaluated, and that oral hygiene frequencies of 12h and 24h are compatible with maintenance of gingival health.
