In the current context, social and environmental concerns of society require from public and private organizations sustainable policies and actions. In the federal institutions of third-level education (IFES), that are diffusers organizations of knowledge, there s a need to think of environmental issues and also generate initiatives that make possible to create social and environmentally responsible educational environments. Identify the perceptions of members of the UFSM about the environment and propose a training program of Environmental Management to the servers of the Institution. This study was an exploratory analysis and it is classified regarding the focus like a qualitative research, researching on websites, documents and legislation, and so semi-structured interviews. The interviews were done with other IFES and government agencies of judicial area, as well as the public servants and managers of the UFSM and also members of committees that work with the subject matter of sustainability in the institution. Results of the study showed that the respondents are available to participate of activities in the environmental, because the considerations showed in the research are sure about the importance of environmental management. In this respect, running the activities that contextualize theory and practice, that are focused on the rational use of resources and public goods, waste management, on environmental legislation, in quality of life at the workplace; sustainable procurements can be developed in the institution, once it was the most recommended themes by the respondents. All respondents stressed the need to work with the theory in order to educate the people; however they pointed out as essential to do practical actions concurrently to get better outcomes from the training. In the point of view of this dissertation authoress it is needed an institutional work to create a culture of attention to the environmental aspects linked to the training, which will help the institution to achieve its environmental objectives, because it will provide clarification for its internal community.
