We created a set of 80 musical stimuli encompassing seven domains of music perception to inform perception of tonal, atonal, and modal stimuli, in a random sample of 1006 children, 6-13 years of age, equally distributed from first to fifth grades, from 14 schools (38% private schools) in So Paulo State. The underlying model was tested using confirmatory factor analysis. A model encompassing seven orthogonal specific domains (contour, loudness, scale, timbre, duration, pitch, and meter) and one general music perception factor, the m-factor, showed excellent fit indices. The m-factor, previously hypothesized in the literature but never formally tested, explains 93% of the reliable variance in measurement, while only 3.9% of the reliable variance could be attributed to the multidimensionality caused by the specific domains. The 80 items showed no differential item functioning based on sex, age, or enrolment in public vs. private school, demonstrating the important psychometric feature of invariance. Like Charles Spearman's g-factor of intelligence, the m-factor is robust and reliable. It provides a convenient measure of auditory stimulus apprehension that does not rely on verbal information, offering a new opportunity to probe biological and psychological relationships with music perception phenomena and the etiologies of speech and language disorders.Sao Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP)CAPESState Univ Sao Paulo UNESP, Mus Dept, Sao Paulo, BrazilUniv Toronto, Dept Pharmacol & Toxicol, Toronto, ON, CanadaSunnybrook Res Inst, Hurvitz Brain Sci Program, Toronto, ON, CanadaSimon Fraser Univ, Sch Engn, Surrey, BC, CanadaUniv Southern Calif, Thornton Sch Mus, Program Mus Teaching & Learning, Los Angeles, CA USAUniv Fed Sao Paulo, Dept Psychiat & Med Psychol, Sao Paulo, BrazilUCL, Inst Educ, Ctr Longitudinal Studies, Dept Social Sci, London, EnglandTexas Tech Univ, Inst Measurement Methodol Anal & Policy, Lubbock, TX 79409 USAKeele Univ, Fac Nat Sci, Keele, Staffs, EnglandKeele Univ, Sch Psychol, Keele, Staffs, EnglandUniv Fed Sao Paulo, Dept Psychiat & Med Psychol, Sao Paulo, BrazilFAPESP: 2014/06662-8FAPESP: 2016/50195-0CAPES: 23038.009191/2013-76, AUXPE no 0374/2016Web of Science-engFrontiers Media SaFrontiers In NeuroscienceassessmentpsychometricshearingChildrenmusic perceptionbifactor modelAssessing Music Perception in Young Children: Evidence for and Psychometric Features of the M-Factorinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/articleLausanne11info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessreponame:Repositório Institucional da UNIFESPinstname:Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)instacron:UNIFESPORIGINALWOS000392630100003.pdfapplication/pdf1134387${dspace.ui.url}/bitstream/11600/55235/1/WOS000392630100003.pdfcf063d845a1310ec9984dcfa8304a306MD51open access11600/552352022-09-19 22:29:24.355open accessoai:repositorio.unifesp.br:11600/55235Repositório InstitucionalPUBhttp://www.repositorio.unifesp.br/oai/requestopendoar:34652022-09-20T01:29:24Repositório Institucional da UNIFESP - Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP)false |
