Resumo: | Self-compassion involves a welcoming way of dealing with yourself, even though painful emotions are present. Cultivating this ability changes the internal environment making it possible to accept the pain and embrace it tenderly, resulting in an increase in well-being momentarily and over time. The purpose of this Integrative Review is to understand the relationship between self-compassion and well-being, as well as the main psychological mechanisms involved. The publications were consulted in the PubMed, Portal BVS, Scielo and Google Scholar databases and after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria and critical analysis of the collected publications, only 11 articles were considered as part of this integrative review. The results show that well-being can be increased by the practice of self-compassion, which is also a skill that can be learned. It is important to understand the difference between selfcompassion and self-esteem, since both involve positive feelings towards oneself, but they act quite differently. Self-esteem depends on positive self-judgment and is often associated with competitiveness, isolation and narcissism. Self-compassion leads to a friendly relationship with you and interconnected with others, since this self-acceptance is based on the recognition of the imperfect nature of the human condition. Regularity in the formal and informal practice of self-compassion can develop numerous protective factors for mental health. Three main psychological mechanisms were identified: 1) internal context of tranquility to welcome the stressful event with responsibility and kindness; 2) better capacity for emotional regulation through unconditional acceptance and cognitive reevaluation; 3) expansion and construction of cognitive, emotional, physical and social resources through the self-generated emotion of opening the heart. Self-compassion is a skill that provides personal and interpersonal benefits, as it generates compassion. |

Self-compassion is a skill that provides personal and interpersonal benefits, as it generates compassion.
