Resumo: | Learning disabilities are characterized by heterogenic profiles. Such fact supports the need of better understanding underpinning neuropsychological characteristics associated to different disorders such as dyslexia, dysgraphia and dyscalculia, in order to contribute to the identification of commorbidities and a more precise diagnosis and intervention program. Learning processes are clearly influenced by different factors. Studies have shown the interference of sleep on learning and referred to behavioral changes in children with sleep disordered breathing (SDB). However, few studies have explored the occurrence of sleep disorders (SD) in children with dyslexia. Therefore, the present study aims to investigate neuropsychological characteristics and possible changes in sleep patterns in dyslexia. For such, 73 children, with age ranges from 8 to 15 years, were submitted to a neuropsychological (three sessions) and polysomnographic assessment (two consecutives nights). The sample was divided into two groups: CG (control group), composed of 34 children (20 male) with no referral or diagnosis of learning difficulties; and EG (experimental group), composed of 39 children (27 males) diagnosed with dyslexia, according to DSM IV-R criterias. Statistical analysis was conducted using General Linear Model equations (GLM), co-varied to FSIQ (Full scale Intelligence Quoefficient) scores. Results demonstrated significant differences between groups (CG and EG) on the following neuropsychological variables: reading, spelling, mathematics and overall (total) scores (ps≤ 0,0001); digits DO (direct order) and IO (inverse order) (ps≤ 0,005); semantic fluency (animal and fruit) (ps≤ 0,003); letter fluency in letters F, A and FAS (ps≤ 0,05); number of categories and number of total cards in the WCST (ps≤ 0,05), left and right discrimination (in self and in other) (ps≤0,001). The analysis of the polysomnography (PSG) data revealed significant differences between nights 1 and 2, however no differences between groups was found on the second PSG night (ps≤ 0,05). Such finding indicate that deficits observed in children with dyslexia are related to difficulties in executive functions, working memory and semantic memory, which reinforces the idea that intervention programs should emphasize not only phonological abilities, but also other underpinning components that interfere on their overall achievement. The investigation of sleep complaints, through questionnaires, or a PSG evaluation can also be very useful tools in an interdisciplinary assessment, once they corroborate for a differential diagnosis. |

The investigation of sleep complaints, through questionnaires, or a PSG evaluation can also be very useful tools in an interdisciplinary assessment, once they corroborate for a differential diagnosis.A heterogeneidade que caracteriza os distúrbios de aprendizagem (DA) faz com que seja importante compreender as características neuropsicológicas subjacentes ao processo de leitura e escrita nos diferentes DA, tais como dislexia, disgrafia e discalculia, para que se possa contribuir para o diagnóstico, na identificação de comorbidades e a intervenção adequada. Sabe-se que a aprendizagem é influenciada por diferentes fatores, sendo que alguns estudos têm mostrado a influência do sono na aprendizagem e referido alterações comportamentais em crianças com distúrbios respiratórios do sono (DRS). Entretanto, pouco se sabe sobre a ocorrência de distúrbios de sono (DS) na dislexia. Dessa forma, o objetivo deste trabalho foi compreender as características neuropsicológicas e investigar possíveis alterações no padrão de sono de crianças com dislexia. Para isso, um grupo composto por 73 crianças com idades entre 8 e 15 anos foram submetidas a avaliação neuropsicológica (3 sessões) e polissonográfica (2 noites). A amostra foi dividida em 2 grupos: GC (grupo controle) composto de 34 crianças (20 meninos) sem queixas de dificuldades de aprendizagem e sem diagnóstico de Distúrbios de Aprendizagem, pareados com o GE por idade, sexo, série e tipo de escola e GE (grupo experimental) composto de 39 (27 meninos) crianças diagnosticadas com Dislexia, de acordo com critérios do DSM – IV-TR. Por meio da análise de modelo linear geral, a qual covariou o QIT (Quociente de Inteligência Total), foi possível observar diferença significativa entre os grupos GC e GE nas seguintes variáveis neuropsicológicas: leitura, escrita, matemática e total (ps≤ 0,0001); dígitos OD (ordem direta) e OI (ordem inversa) (ps≤ 0,005); fluência animais e frutas (ps≤ 0,003); fluência F (letra F), A (letra A) e FAS (ps≤ 0,05); número de categorias e total de cartas (ps≤ 0,05) do Teste de Classificação de Cartas de Wisconsin (WCST), discriminação direita e esquerda em si e no outro (ps≤0,001). A análise dos dados da polissonografia (PSG) mostra diferenças entre as noites 1 e 2, mas não aponta diferenças entre os dois grupos estudados na segunda noite de PSG (ps≤ 0,05). Esses resultados indicam que os déficits nas crianças com dislexia parecem se aglomerar em torno das funções executivas, memória operacional e memória semântica, sugerindo que os programas de intervenção não devem enfatizar apenas as habilidades fonológicas, mas também incluir outros componentes que influenciam no desempenho dos disléxicos.
