Resumo: Largely consumed in Japan and in several countries around the world, manga – Japanese comics – have become one of the most known and beloved sequential art styles due to their broad range of approached topics and their unique visual characteristics. Nowadays, manga are one of the leading means of expressing Nipponese art and culture in the Western World, where they influence a number of medias like games, video clips, movies and animations. In Brazil, passion for manga and other Japanese pop culture elements assembles thousands of fans to take part in big conventions spread throughout the country, besides arousing their interest in studying drawing, Japanese language, martial arts, and so on. For these reasons, these comics are worth a place in Brazilian researches, especially as regards their visual features. This monograph presents the study of manga with the primary goal of emphasizing their artistic qualities, through the exposition of their nature starting from the hybridization between elements of various art expressions like cinema, woodblock print (ukiyo-e), paint rollers (emakimono), western comics and theater. Among the subjects to be addressed concerning manga are: their history and precedents; Osamu Tezuka’s contributions to the area; their importance in Japanese society; manga and anime diffusion in Brazil and in the West; and the analysis of some of their main characteristics – division by genres, cinematography, typesetting, onomatopoeias, trace, emotional expressions and kawaii aesthetics.

Atualmente, são um dos principais meios de expressão da arte e cultura nipônica no Ocidente, onde influenciam diversas mídias como jogos, videoclipes, filmes e animações. No Brasil, a paixão por mangás e outros elementos da cultura pop japonesa mobiliza milhares de fãs a participarem de grandes convenções espalhadas por todo o país, além de despertar-lhes o interesse pelo estudo do desenho, língua japonesa, artes marciais, entre outros. Por estas razões, estes quadrinhos merecem seu espaço nas pesquisas brasileiras, especialmente no que se refere a seus aspectos visuais. A monografia em questão propõe o estudo dos mangás com o principal objetivo de ressaltar suas qualidades artísticas, através da demonstração de sua constituição a partir da hibridização entre elementos de diversas expressões da arte como cinema, gravura (ukiyo-e), rolos de pintura (emakimono), quadrinhos ocidentais e teatro.
