Resumo: This article intends to contextualize and tell the history of Planalto Paulista, the regional insert produced and published by former newspaper Gazeta Mercantil. Planalto Paulista was intended to consolidate the newspaper brand during its expansion period and was part of a series of other regional inserts launched during the late 1990s and closed in the early 2000s. For this purpose, this work is based on a literature review on brazilian economic journalism, on Gazeta Mercantil, and more specifically on the creation of Planalto Paulista in 1998 and its closure in 2002. The content is complemented by interviews with journalists who have worked for the project at the time.   KEYWORDS: Gazeta Mercantil; Planalto Paulista; brazilian economic journalism; Campinas; regional section.

Pensado para consolidar a marca do jornal durante seu período de expansão, o Planalto Paulista fez parte de um conjunto de outros encartes regionais lançados durante o final da década de 90 e fechados no início dos anos 2000. Para tanto, este trabalho parte de uma revisão bibliográfica sobre o jornalismo econômico brasileiro, sobre o jornal Gazeta Mercantil e, mais especificamente, sobre a criação do Planalto Paulista em 1998 e seu fechamento, em 2002.
