Strategic and Instrumental Subcompetencies in Translator Training: results of the first phase of a longitudinal study

Resumo: This article presents the partial results of a study on Translation Competence Acquisition developed under the project Competência Tradutória e Formação de Tradutores: o desenvolvimento das subcompetências específicas do tradutor - CNPq 485158/2013-2 (Translation Competence and Translator Training: developing subcompetencies specific to translators). The main goal of the study was to investigate the development of strategic and instrumental subcompetencies in translation students by identifying the main strategies for solving translation problems adopted by the subjects under investigation. It is a longitudinal study, which draws on PACTE’s (2003) holistic model of translation competence and its concept of translation competence (TC): “the underlying knowledge system needed to translate”. According to PACTE’s TC model, translation competence consists of five subcompetencies: bilingual, extralinguistic, knowledge about translation, instrumental and strategic. The instrumental subcompetence is related to the use of documentation sources while the strategic subcompetence is related to the management of the translation process and the development of strategies for solving translation problems. Data were collected using the programs Translog (logging keyboard activity and pause duration) and Camtasia (screen recording). Drawing on Jakobsen’s (2002) and PACTE’s (2005) methodologies, the type of pause (orientation and revision) and support (internal and external; simple and dominant) used by the subjects during decision making were identified and classified, as well as the main documentation sources. Results of the first research phase indicate that the subjects’ instrumental and strategic subcompetencies are still underdeveloped, and, although the subjects are familiar with different kinds of documentation sources, they don’t know how to use them properly to render adequate translation solutions. These results reveal the importance of reflecting and discussing on issues related to documentation sources and management of the translation process in the context of translator training.

These results reveal the importance of reflecting and discussing on issues related to documentation sources and management of the translation process in the context of translator training.Neste artigo, são apresentados os resultados parciais de um estudo sobre Aquisição da Competência Tradutória desenvolvido no âmbito do projeto Competência Tradutória e Formação de Tradutores: o desenvolvimento das subcompetências específicas do tradutor - CNPq 485158/2013-2. O principal objetivo do estudo foi investigar o desenvolvimento das subcompetências estratégica e instrumental em tradutoras e tradutores em formação, a partir da identificação das principais estratégias de resolução de problemas de tradução adotadas pelos sujeitos sob escrutínio. Trata-se de um estudo longitudinal que se baseia no modelo holístico assim como no conceito de Competência Tradutória (CT) de PACTE (2003), de acordo com o qual a CT é considerada “um conjunto de habilidades e conhecimentos subjacentes necessários para realizar uma tarefa de tradução”. De acordo com o modelo de CT de PACTE, a competência tradutória consiste de cinco subcompetências: bilíngue, extralinguística, conhecimentos sobre tradução, instrumental e estratégica. A subcompetência instrumental está relacionada ao uso de fontes de documentação, enquanto a subcompetência estratégica está relacionada ao gerenciamento do processo de tradução e desenvolvimento de estratégias de resolução de problemas de tradução. Os dados foram coletados com o programa Translog (movimentos de teclado e duração de pausa) e Camtasia (gravação de tela). Com base nas metodologias de Jakosen (2002) e PACTE (2005), o tipo de pausa (orientação e revisão) e apoio (interno e externo; simples e dominante) utilizados pelos sujeitos de pesquisa durante o processo de tomada de decisão foram identificados e classificados, assim como as principais fontes de documentação. Os resultados da primeira fase da pesquisa indicam que as subcompetências instrumental e estratégica dos sujeitos ainda estão pouco desenvolvidas e, embora eles já estejam familiarizados com diferentes fontes de documentação, ainda não sabem como utilizá-las de forma apropriada para chegar a soluções de tradução adequadas.
