Resumo: This study addresses the use of rhotics in coda position in the Metropolitan Area of Porto Alegre, particularly the retroflex articulation, from the perspective of Variationist Sociolinguistics (Labov, 1966, 1972). The study comprises 45 interviews from the Ricardo-Schwindt corpus, covering 5 cities in the area. The results indicated a low presence of retroflex rhotic in the Metropolitan Area compared to other varieties of Brazilian Portuguese, but a significant increase when compared to its use in the capital, Porto Alegre, in the 1980s and 1990s. Retroflex pronunciation seems to be related, among other aspects, to contexts that share phonetic properties with this variant, suggesting some assimilatory motivation for its emergence. Furthermore, significant differences were identified in the use of retroflex between the cities analyzed.
