Figurativity in discourse semiotics: from the panofskyan heritage to the greimasian legacy

This article aims to present the origin of the concept of figurativity in discourse semiotics, assuming that it was incorporated into the metalanguage of this discipline through conceptual borrowing from aesthetic theory. It is also the aim of this paper to show how the look on figurativity, whose role in the construction of meaning involves the articulation of simulacra of the natural world with the thymic and sensitive dimensions as the subjects perceive and apprehend the objects so that the enunciatee is persuaded to believe in the discourse manifested in verbal, nonverbal and syncretic texts, is transformed over the years, periodizing the changes of perspective on figurativity as its evolution is described. The corpus is composed of books and articles that deal with the role of this concept in the construction of meaning, published between 1966 and 2008. The result of this research is the verification that semiotics relies mainly on Panfskyan studies on iconography and iconology, but also on theoretical contributions from linguists such as Hjelmslev and Jakobson. Finally, the research concludes that figurativity remains operational in semiotics and contributing to the evolution of the theory.
