The definition of adjectives in PNLD dictionaries: a metalexicographical look

This article analyzes, from a descriptive perspective, the definitions of lexical words that fall into the category of adjectives registered in two dictionaries of the PNLD - Programa Nacional do Livro Didático, namely: Dicionário Escolar da Academia Brasileira de Letras - Bechara ( 2011) – type 3, and Dicionário da Língua Portuguesa Evanildo Bechara - Bechara (2011) – type 4. Therefore, this text is based on theoretical and methodological principles of general Lexicography and Pedagogical Lexicography, specifically considering the principles that govern the lexicographic definition and the types of definition presented by Porto Dapena (2002). The results demonstrate that such principles highlight the importance of considering them in the process of elaborating lexicographic definitions, always in accordance with the different types of existing definitions. Both these principles and the diversity of types of definitions allow lexicographers to adopt organizational parameters in accordance with the objectives of the work and its target audience.
