Resumo: The article deals with the origins of Cognitive Metaphor Theory in the field of philosophy, revealing a multifarious panorama of predecessors of conceptual metaphor before the advent of Metaphors We Live By (LAKOFF; JOHNSON. 1980/2003). Starting from the nine hypotheses by Jäkel (2003) which seek to comprise the core of the theory according to Lakoff & Johnson as well as to their successors, our aim is to establish to what extent the key points of Cognitive semantics were already prefigured in the philosophies of three different centuries – in Rationalistic, Empiristic, Idealistic, Romantic reflections as well as those belonging to the Critique of Language.
