Resumo: “Brazilians are backwards Narcissus, spitting in their own image” (RODRIGUES, 2013). With these words, Nelson Rodrigues describes the “Mongrel Complex”, characterized as a voluntary and self-deprecating stance, based on a negative ideological view of Brazil, seen in all sectors of Brazilian society. Reaching back to the Recife-born author’s keen intuition, the main objective of this article is to understand the ideology of mongrelism as discursively constructed in social media journalistic profiles comments section. In order to do so, based on the ideology conception systematized by Thompson (1995) as “the sense in service of power”, a theoretical framework is organized having as its components Nelson Rodrigues’ understanding of Brazilian chronic pessimism towards themselves and the language model established by Systemic-Functional Linguistics. Guided by the Appraisal System (MARTIN; WHITE, 2005), the analyses developed give evidence to the role played by the evaluative elements in the discourse concretization of the mongrelism in the comments sections of the profiles examined. In addition to it, it is spotted in this ideology a guide wire that cuts across all discourses that express deprecation, pessimism and hate towards Brazil.
