Resumo: The article analyzes the effect of population displacement on the implementation of linguistic changes in a variety of popular Brazilian Portuguese, Afro-Brazilian Portuguese, in the context of Brazil’s sociolinguistic polarization. The algorithm of sociolinguistic polarization predicts a linguistic leveling, with the diffusion of prestigious variants in the big cities to all social classes and to all regions of the country, triggering changes from above in Popular Brazilian Portuguese, so that the old forms produced by language contact in the past are being replaced by urban forms with social prestige. The migration of individuals from rural communities to urban centers in search of work and their return to their communities of origin has been a factor driving these changes. In order to prove this hypothesis, we have computed the quantitative results of the explanatory variable referring to the population displacement produced by ten sociolinguistic analyzes about variable aspects of the morphosyntax in the isolated Afro-Brazilian rural communities. The empirical data proved the hypothesis by demonstrating that the population displacement is really a propelling factor of the linguistic change in the social context observed.
