Resumo: | This article presents the results of a longitudinal study on the situation of literacy of elderly women who attended a literacy class in the Literacy Movement of Young and Adults (MOVA), in Guarulhos, State of São Paulo, during periods that varied between 7 and 13 years. This study was conducted in two stages by means of the methodology of educational autobiography and tests in reading and writing, having as a primary goal to unveil the advances and setbacks in literacy and in the achievements of orality. Based on that unveiling, the secondary objective is to problematize the social function and the effectiveness of the Movement frequented by the subjects. The main hypothesis, partially confirmed, was that there was no continuity of schooling and that the situation of current literacy would be more precarious than the one verified in the first stage of this study. Thus, it was concluded that the reasons for the existence of the MOVA-Guarulhos and the permanence of the students were ambiguous: on the one hand, promotion of literacy; on the other hand, the need of socialization. |
