Resumo: | The purpose of this article is to analyze the coincidence between experience and expression that marked the life / work of the musician Itamar Assumpção. To do so, we address this issue in ethical and aesthetic terms. As a popular musician, the artist always made a point of behaving -on and off stage- as if he were carrying the burden of accomplishing a mission. We sought to identify and think about a number of elements found in the origin and constitution of his quest, as well as on the unique musical style it brought about. Straddling contradictions between rejecting the media and becoming an icon of urban commercial music, between an intuitive compositional process and a demand for refinement, it is within paradox that Itamar clearly develops his style the seriousness of his irony-filled music, with his feet firmly planted in the loose soil of São Paulo city musical (non-)tradition. Para isso, abordamos a questão em termos éticos e estéticos. Em seu papel de músico popular, o artista sempre fez questão de se portar – dentro e fora do palco – como se estivesse carregando o fardo do cumprimento de uma missão. Procuramos identificar e pensar a respeito de alguns elementos presentes na origem e na constituição dessa busca, bem como sobre o singular estilo musical por ela e nela gerado. Montado na contradição entre o repúdio à mídia e a determinação em se tornar um ícone da música comercial urbana, entre um processo composicional intuitivo e a exigência de refinamento, é no paradoxo que Itamar elabora claramente seu estilo: a seriedade de uma música recheada de ironia, com os pés bem fincados no solo movediço da (não) tradição musical paulistana.
