Resumo: The article explores the first two sections of Euclides da Cunha's book Os sertões: "The Land" and "The Man". Based on the reading of other authors and some commentators, with Nietzsche's critique of modernity as background, the article plans to analyze the tragic dimension of the backwoodsman as constructed in Euclides, without disregarding the narrative movements that produced what we may call an ethical inversion, when the writer imposed himself on the journalist and ex-military man then charged with recording the Canudos campaign at its peak, when the followers of Antonio Conselheiro would be decimated by army troops.
