The main objective of this article is to analyze the campaign against Marighella (Wagner Moura, 2019) in order to offer some social reasons that explain, at least in part, the current political effectiveness of the new rights. In this sense, I argue that the rhetoric of hatred of the new rights formulates a spectral discourse, in which the same narratives and archetypes are updated in order to keep their interlocutors in permanent mobilization. In the case of Marighella, the new rights alleges that Wagner Moura was taken by the “revolutionary mentality”, that his film, in addition to being a racist play, would exalt a terrorist with resources from the Rouanet Law. In conclusion, I emphasize that the political effectiveness of the rhetoric of the new rights is better understood when we insert it into the social totality in which it functions, marked by a growing spiral of instability, typical of neoliberalism. To this end, around 50 videos aired on YouTube were analyzed, especially on new rights channels.
