Luiz de Barros in Brazilian cinema: historiography and intermediality

Resumo: | Luiz “Lulu” de Barros directed more than a hundred films between the 1910s and 1970s, in one of the most enduring careers in Brazilian cinema. He also made a significant contribution to other types of shows, such as teatro de revista (stage revues) and carnival balls, working as a director, set designer and impresario. Discussion of his activities in this article will take two approaches. First, matters regarding Brazilian film historiography will be addressed, as a way to understand the criteria that guided the often negative treatment toward Luiz de Barros’s films and the filmmaker himself. Then, his first years of professional activity in the 1910s will be analyzed from the perspective of intermediality and the dialogue with foreign cinema, in order to emphasize the connections among different media and cultural practices. |

Teve contribuição expressiva também em outros tipos de espetáculos, como teatro de revista e bailes de carnaval, trabalhando como encenador, cenógrafo e empresário. Este artigo irá discutir suas atividades a partir de duas abordagens. Inicialmente, serão desenvolvidas questões relacionadas à historiografia do cinema brasileiro, procurando compreender os critérios que nortearam o tratamento frequentemente negativo conferido aos filmes de Luiz de Barros e ao próprio cineasta.
