Photographies from the 1934 Portuguese Colonial Exhibition: a political affirmation of the salazarist regime

Resumo: Photography had an important role in the elaboration of the colonial experience in the metropolis, once it had been used to record the colonial’s own actions in their different areas and affirm their political ideas, fundamentally those that associated Portuguese nationality with a “gift of colonizing the world”. In this sense, the article intends to analyze the Civilização magazine edition dedicated to the Portuguese Colonial Exhibition of 1934 to assess how the photographic images presented in it could expand the colonial propaganda messages of the regime at a time of construction of colonialism in the Estado Novo. These visual sources were not limited to that time. When made available online today, they continue to promote colonial experiences in a different way regarding the public’s interaction with photography.
