Resumo: In this article, we examine Diário da navegação, written by Major Teotônio José Juzarte on the end of 18th century. Guided by precepts of rhetoric and poetics, we intended to bring the reader closer to the mentality conceived by the Portuguese crown during the reign of Dom José I. In this analysis we discuss the place of the travel narrative as a genre close to the epic form, which presupposes reading this report beyond the anachronistic criteria of originality, marks of subjectivity and authorship. In this way, we rescue links between History (according to the conception of Herodotus) and Rhetoric, in agreement with the precepts of Aristotle. This study considers the lexicon used by Juzarte and propose that his repertoire is appropriate to the theme, the style and the genre.

Orientado por preceitos de retórica e poética, pretende-se aproximar o leitor da mentalidade concebida pela coroa portuguesa, durante o reinado de Dom José I. Na análise, discute-se o lugar da narrativa de viagem, compreendida aqui como gênero próximo da épica, o que pressupõe ler o relato para além dos critérios anacrônicos de originalidade, marcas de subjetividade e autoria. Para isso, resgatam-se os vínculos entre a História (segundo a concepção de Heródoto) e a Retórica, em acordo com os preceitos de Aristóteles.
