Resumo: In Brazil, 16% of the population, approximately 35 million people, do not have access to treated water, according to data released in 2020 based on 2018 by the National Sanitation Information System. Based on these conjectures, this article aimed to present the current scenario of basic sanitation in the municipality of Romaria (MG), and the quality of water offered to the population. The methodology used was based on exploratory research. And as for the research approach, it was qualitative-quantitative. The procedures took place in several stages, such as: bibliographic and documentary research, field trips that were essential to know the environment and its nuances. Water samples were collected to evaluate the water quality index, then they were sent to SENAI/LEMAM laboratory for evaluation. The main problems found in the municipality were: the quality of the water offered, which is unsuitable for human consumption. Incorrect destination and disposal of solid waste, with an open dump and a gully as final disposal. Deactivated water and sewage treatment plant, causing streams to receive a large part of domestic sewage without any previous treatment. Finally, considerations were made, pointing out which documents to solve the problems the municipality already has and does not use.
