Resumo: This article aims to deepen the discussion about agricultural activity in metropolitan cities. Our analysis focuses specifically on the Fortaleza Metropolitan Area (FMA), State of Ceará, Brazil, and allows us to further understand family farming in that area. For this purpose, we reviewed a set of primary and secondary data regarding the profile of the producers and agricultural and food processing establishments in the metropolitan area under analysis. This multifaceted approach helped us identify key issues related to production and food systems in the FMA, and showed the importance of a research agenda focused on evaluating the potential of family farming in this specific context. This study presents the production strategies adopted, the challenges faced and the opportunities identified by family farmers. Discussing agriculture in metropolitan areas help us connect socio-spatial and socio-environmental problems, in addition to enabling us to suggest the development of cross-sectoral public policies. By offering a comprehensive overview, this study aims to contribute to effective policy making, promoting the sustainability and resilience of family farming in metropolitan contexts. We hope that the reflection on agriculture developed in such areas and its characteristics in local and metropolitan scenarios will be helpful to researchers, managers and those responsible for the implementation and execution of public policies, as well as other agents and entities interested in family (and urban) agriculture.

Nuestra reflexión se centra específicamente en la Región Metropolitana de Fortaleza, en Ceará, y nos ha permitido avanzar en la comprensión de su agricultura familiar. Para ello, hemos analizado un conjunto de datos primarios y secundarios sobre el perfil del productor, las explotaciones agropecuarias y la producción de alimentos en la región metropolitana en cuestión. Esperamos que la reflexión sobre las agriculturas realizadas en este espacio y su caracterización en contextos municipales y metropolitanos sea útil para investigadores, gestores y responsables de políticas públicas, así como para otros actores e instituciones interesados en la agricultura familiar (y urbana).Este texto objetiva ampliar as discussões em torno da atividade agropecuária em municípios metropolitanos. Nossa reflexão recai especificamente sobre a Região Metropolitana de Fortaleza, no Ceará, e nos permitiu avançar no entendimento da sua agricultura familiar. Para isso, analisamos um conjunto de dados primários e secundários a respeito do perfil do produtor, dos estabelecimentos agropecuários e da produção de alimentos na região metropolitana em análise. Essa abordagem multifacetada nos ajudou a identificar questões-chave relacionadas à produção e aos sistemas alimentares na RMF, bem como mostrou a importância de agenda de pesquisa que busque avaliar o potencial da agricultura familiar nesse contexto específico. A pesquisa menciona as estratégias de produção adotadas, os desafios enfrentados e as oportunidades identificadas pelos agricultores familiares. Discutir a agricultura nos espaços metropolitanos pode articular várias lutas de natureza socioespacial e socioambiental, além de sugerir a elaboração de políticas públicas intersetoriais. Ao oferecer uma visão abrangente, este estudo visa informar a formulação de políticas eficazes, promovendo a sustentabilidade e a resiliência da agricultura familiar em contextos metropolitanos.
