Resumo: Objective: to identify the knowledge of nursing students in Catalunha regarding the use of medicinal plants as a complementary therapy in health care. Method: Qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive research, carried out through semi-structured interviews, held in March 2016, with nursing students from a Spanish University in the Catalunha region. Data were submitted to Bardin's content analysis, and the research was approved by the Ethics Committee, n. 981.660/2015. Results: The use of medicinal plants as complementary therapy is an easily accessible option, as it is possible to grow them at home and they can be easily found in stores. Knowledge about their use is culturally disseminated, being passed, mainly, by family generations. The scarcity of teaching in the academy about the use of medicinal plants was shown as a concern by the students, as it is necessary to learn how they can teach users during their professional practice. The use of plants in the treatment of diseases is a subject that still needs to be further explored by science, due to its therapeutic efficacy, easy accessibility and integrative contemplation of beliefs and cultures. Conclusion: This common knowledge is evident in the family level and its inclusion in the curriculum of nursing courses is positive to the integral training of professionals.
