This study addresses what Specialized Educational Assistance (SEA) is and its functions, its reality in municipal or state schools in Uberlândia, MG, and how SEA can contribute to the development of deaf students. It explores the roles of Portuguese and Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) teachers in the teaching and learning process of deaf students, as well as the materials used. Therefore, the aim was to discuss the topic of SEA based on bibliographic research related to legislation and the insights of some authors on the subject, along with experiential reports and input from six former SEA students and three teachers who currently or previously worked in SEA. They provided information regarding the SEA structure and the presence of Libras in it, as well as the interdisciplinary collaboration between Libras and Portuguese teachers. As a result of the analysis and discussion of the questionnaire data, it was observed that the presence of Libras and interdisciplinary work in the SEA are important. The general objective of this study was to understand the importance of Brazilian Sign Language in specialized educational assistance to determine if it is possible to teach deaf students without any knowledge of Libras. Additionally, there were three specific objectives included: i) discuss the concept and how Brazilian legislation prescribes the necessary conditions for SEA; ii) briefly discuss what some authors say about SEA; and iii) examine the role of Libras in SEA for deaf students.
