Trees play an important role in the well-being of communities, especially urban ones, and provide countless benefits to society. The objective of this research was to carry out a qualitative and quantitative inventory of the tree-shrub and palm species that make up the afforestation of the Monte Carmelo Campus of the Federal University of Uberlândia (UFU) - Araras Unit. The afforestation survey was of the census type. The parameters evaluated were those related to the characteristics of the trees and the environment, in addition to quantifying and identifying the specimens existing in the study area. Data were collected with the aid of a tape measure, Haglof digital hypsometer, tape measure and field record made with specific parameters to be evaluated. Botanical identification was carried out by a qualified professional. Data were processed via Microsoft Excel. 705 individuals distributed across 100 species, 79 genera and 33 botanical families were identified. 66,1% of the species are native to Brazil. The five species that presented the highest frequency were Handroanthus impetiginosus with 43 individuals, Cenostigma pluviosum (43), Anadenanthera colubrina (27), Tabebuia roseoalba (26) and Psidium guajava (25). 54.5% of the afforestation assessed presented satisfactory and good physical and sanitary conditions. Almost 22% had a dense canopy. 60% of the species surveyed are species that can reach large sizes in their adult phase. There were no conflicts between the afforestation and the local infrastructure. In general, the characteristics of the environment were positive. Some management practices such as pruning, fertilization, irrigation and pest control are necessary. The study population showed good species diversity and uniformity. It is suggested that new plantings be carried out with an emphasis on the use of regional native species and species with specific characteristics for each location with a defined objective, such as species for shading and with potential for use as windbreaks.
