O filósofo e a dor: a concepção das filosofias epicurista e estoica no Livro II das Discussões Tusculanas

The aim of this dissertation is to analyze the conception of the epicurean and stoic philosophies in the book II of the work Tusculan Disputations, of Cicero, whose theme is the pain (dolor): its concept, its moral valuation and the prescriptions for resisting it. Firstly, it was made a study about the aspects of the work, of the author and of the period. Understanding the writing and translating styles, since Cicero is identified as one of the main translators of greek philosophy to latin, as well as the meaning of the theme for the set of the work, for the author’s public and private life and also for the roman hellenistic philosophy in contrast with the greek hellenistic philosophy is necessary for a fuller analysis of the book, how intended. Then, it was made an exposition of the theses and argumentations exposed by Cicero along the book II, emphasizing the two philosopher with which he establishes a direct dialogue, namely, Epicurus and Zeno of Citium, with the objective of presenting which conception the roman thinker expresses for each one, that is, presenting the “Epicurus of Cicero” and the “Zeno of Cicero”, to understand what is his own conception about the theme. δastly, the Arpinate’s conception of these philosophers was analyzed in contrast with other conceptions, trying to understand the social and political reasons for the acceptation or rejection of those thinkers and their respective theories in ancient Rome.
