The recovery of spermatozoa from the reproductive tract of dead animals or orchiectomized is an interesting technique for the conservation of genetic material. The objective of the study was to characterize the morphological aspects of spermatozoa from dogs obtained from the testicles, head and tail of the epididymis and vas deferens. Samples were collected from ten animals after orchiectomy. The testicles were received a cross section in the middle third and washed with PBS solution (Dulbecco modified), the same with the head and tail of the epididymis and the vas deferens after slicing. The spermatic morphology was evaluated using phase contrast optical microscopy (wet chamber) and blades stained with rose bengala. The supravital test with eosin-nigrosin was also performed. The proportion of spermatozoa with abnormalities was considered high, being 47% in the testis, 65% in the head of the epididymis, 57% in the tail of the epididymis and 44% in the vas deferens. The types of pathologies of higher incidence were defects of proximal cytoplasmic droplet, strongly folded or coiled tail, and isolated heads. The supravital test evidenced the increase of living cells along the reproductive tract with 33% in the testis, 77 in the head of the epididymis, 80% in the tail of the epididymis and 79% in the vas deferens. The techniques used were efficient to obtain epididymal spermatozoa in dogs, and they presented a high number of morphological alterations, but it was evident that the epididymis selected and removed from the semen dead and defective cells during sperm maturation.
