Resumo: Introduction: The Sterilization and Materials Center (CME) is responsible for processing medical and hospital materials, such as surgical boxes (surgical instruments), the institutions own materials and consignments, which are stored in the CME itself or in the Surgical Center. Consignment materials condensed into boxes of various sizes, shapes and weights, influencing the risk of packaging violability and consequently endangering the sterility and validity of the surgical material. Objective: To evaluate the risk of weight-related violability of surgical boxes. Methods: It was an exploratory and descriptive study, with observational approach, with dimension of the quantitative weight evaluation and the risk for packaging rupture during the storage of consigned material at the Uberlândia Clinical Hospital of the Federal University of Uberlândia (HC). -UFU). The weight of the consignment's surgical boxes was checked by means of electronic scales regulated with the INMETRO conference symbol, and then the integrity of the packaging was visually assessed in terms of risk of tampering (torn / wrinkled) or tampered (torn / punctured). Results: We evaluated 113 boxes of consigned surgical material, the breach of the packaging in the form of hole and or torn and the risk of violation as: scraped and / or dented for weight range from 2kg to 4kg were 4, 3% - 12.0%; with weight between 4kg-8kg with 5.4% to 15.7%,between 8kg-12kg showed in 9.1% to 38.1% and in 12kg-16kg presented 14.3% to 60.0%. The position of the surgical box stacking in the shelf, it was observed that in the first three of 4 positions presented 10.0% -16.0% of violations, in the second of 5.0% to 10.0% and in the third of 0%.- 4.2% respectively; the box in the fourth position presented a violation of 2.2%. Conclusion: It concluded that the study-evidenced non-conformity evidencing to event-related, violation of the packaging of sterilized material inside the storage unit and may be allusive to weight. Corrective measures needs be implemented, to ensure the integrity of sterile materials as well as patient safety as a user of reliably reprocessed materials.
