Resumo: Objective To compare feeding in the first year of life of infants from adolescent and adult mothers. Methods A cross-sectional study was carried out with data from infants under one year of age from the II Prevalence Survey on Breastfeeding, performed at the primary health units in the second phase of the 2008 vaccination campaign. Sociodemographic, birth and feeding variables were selected (referring to the last 24 hours). The comparison of feeding data according to maternal age (adults and adolescents) was performed by chi-square and later by Poisson-adjusted regression model (expressed as prevalence ratio (PR)). Results The number of children selected for this study was 106378, and 82,5% of the mothers were adults. Breast milk consumption was similar between adolescent and adult mothers (68.1% vs 65.3%). The prevalence of the supply of some in natura foods was higher for adult mothers: fruits (PR=1.05, 95%CI=1.02; 1.08), salt food (PR=1.05, 95%CI=1.02;1.08), meat (PR=1.20, 95%CI=1.16;1.25), vegetables (PR=1.11, 95%CI=1.08;1.14). On the other hand, the prevalence of industrialized foods was lower for adult mothers, such as: industrialized juice (PR=0.81, 95%CI=0.75;0.86), soda (PR=0.73, 95%CI=0.67;0.79); biscuits (PR=0.92, 95%CI=0.89;0.96), sugar (PR=0.91, 95%CI=0.88;0.94). The prevalence of fresh food supply was also higher for mothers with more than 12 years of schooling compared to those under 3 years of age. The prevalence of pacifier use (PR=0.99, 95%CI=0.97;1.02) and bottle feeding (PR=0.98, 95%CI=0.95;1.00) was similar between adult and adolescents. Conclusion Breastmilk supply is similar among adult and adolescent mothers, however, the fresh foods supply is higher among adult mothers.
