This work aims at the design proposal for the requalification of the São Sebastião square in São Gotardo (MG), based on the reading of the current preexistence and the potentialities of space. It is intended to identify, through established theories and methods in the area in question, the best way to intervene in urban centers considering the importance of the relationship between the built environment, established uses and user demands. The work starts from the discussion of conceptual issues related to the importance of the public space, the construction of the landscape, the multiplicity and diversity of uses and the importance of accessibility to a dynamic and living environment that fosters citizenship and urban democracy. From there, it intends to develop a project proposal for the São Sebastião square that is more befitting to the current historical context and to the new dynamics of the public square in small cities.
