Resumo: Objective: To characterize maternal practices and hospital breastfeeding routines in the first days of life. Methods: Cross-sectional study conducted in two public (HPu1 / HPu2) and one private (HPr) hospitals in Uberlândia-MG. The target audience was the mother-baby binomial, which was delivered 24 hours after the interview. Sociodemographic data, type of delivery, type of food the baby was receiving, type of support and knowledge about breastfeeding (BF) were collected. Categorical variables were expressed as relative frequencies and compared between hospitals using chi-square; and the continuous variables in average and standard deviation. Results: The most prevalent type of delivery was cesarean section (58.6%), especially in HPr (98.3%). Most postpartum women had companions at birth (92.1%). Most babies were born with gestational age between 38-39 weeks (48.8%) and in HPu2 52.0% of babies were born at ≥40 weeks. About the child's diet, 70.8% were exclusively breastfed (EBF), 77.0% in HPu2 and 59.6% in HPr. The frequency of breastfeeding in the first hour of life (BF1h) was 7% in HPr, 56.5% in HPu1 and 50.5% in HPu2. The use of complement in the three hospitals was 29.1% mainly due to weight loss (29.0%), hypoglycemia (21.3%) and difficulties with the handle (17.0%), which is offered in the cup. (90.3%). Most of the mothers received breastfeeding aid (78.1%), mainly from nurses (84.1%). Most mothers (71.3%) knew about the Human Milk Bank, mainly because it encourages the donation of breast milk (46.6%). Conclusion: Most of the mothers were offering EBF and received help from health professionals to breastfeed.
