The growth and urban and industrial development along the Brazilian Southeast coast have caused negative impacts, compromising biodiversity and accelerating climate change. This research aims to understand the actions implemented by the government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for the conservation of the coastal-marine system. The general objective is to identify and discuss governmental and NGO actions related to the coastal-marine system in the Southeast region of Brazil, considering their purposes when formulated and implemented nationwide. Based on a qualitative approach and documentary research methodology, the study highlights the importance of oceans and seas as vital and vulnerable ecosystems. The research findings show that NGOs have played a significant role in leading a greater number of initiatives for the conservation of the coastal-marine system. The state of Rio de Janeiro stands out for investing more in these initiatives, including beach cleanups, environmental education, and studies to support preservation efforts. On the other hand, there is a lower emphasis on conservation actions in the state of Minas Gerais, despite the importance of the coast to the region. Through this survey, it was possible to observe the engagement of different actors in seeking effective solutions and actions for the preservation of this important ecosystem. These initiatives reflect the commitment to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and SDG 14, demonstrating the concern to ensure the conservation of marine resources and the promotion of life below water. The results underscore the importance of oceans and seas as vital and vulnerable ecosystems, as well as the negative impact of urban and industrial growth on the Southeast Brazilian coast. These findings are crucial for the formulation of more effective and sustainable strategies for preservation, aiming to protect the coastal-marine system, which is essential for quality of life and the survival of humanity.
