Nowadays, Production Management has a fundamental role for competitiveness among organizations, as it has tools that add value to the goods and services offered. Among these tools the present work used Process Mapping to structure the flow of activities of the department under study and to identify the bottleneck of its processes. In addition, the Pareto Diagram was used to survey the collected data and prioritize problems. Finally, the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) was applied to define how the processes should be operated and how the employees contribute to it. The work was developed from a study of the purchasing process and the registration of agricultural maintenance parts of a sugar and alcohol plant. The study presents the collection of secondary data that are documented and filed in the company's system, and were provided by the plant's maintenance department. In addition, research is considered quantitative because it has metric representations and support in mathematical language. In this way, statistical techniques were used to quantify information of the process and, thus, to go for an analysis of the problems and to identify its root cause. The objective of the study was to identify the cause of emergencies in the purchasing sector and, finally, to propose improvements for the department, aiming to reduce these occurrences. As a result of the research, the cause of the problem was identified in the registration process for maintenance parts never used before, as it is a very complex and time-consuming process. Among the improvement proposals are preventive registration actions, collaboration of suppliers with the management of technical information on parts, good purchasing practices and standardization of processes.
