Resumo: Historically, the focus of nursing, in relation to care, has always been directed towards the care of the other and, minimally, to the care of the professional. Faced with pain, death, conditions and organization of work, care delivery, nurses also, when they lose their health, suffer their impacts, dialectically, in the performance of work. In a Foucaultian perspective, caring for oneself is the way to face things, to be in the world, to practice actions, to have relationships with others; a certain way of looking at oneself; of actions that are exercised from self to self by which one assumes, modifies, purifies, transforms, and transforms. Studying care for self, therefore, enables the understanding not only of the actions of the subjects in the health area, but of the senses that they attribute to these actions in the face of the contexts in which they are produced, justifying their attitudes towards the realities experienced. This study aimed to understand the meaning and challenges for self care from the perspective nurses from a University Hospital. It is a case study with a qualitative methodology, and for that, the construction and analysis of socio-demographic aspects, the diagnosis of self-care practices and their unfolding for the health of these workers occurred through semi-structured interviews. Fifteen male nurses who were employed in care and administrative sectors of the scenario studied, aged between 30 and 62, participated in this study. The narratives were analyzed according to the content analysis in the thematic modality, which allowed the emergence of five thematic categories, namely: 1) "I am me": challenges of caring for oneself in the daily routine; 2) "Caring for me is ...": caring for each other between knowledge and practice; 3) "Choices, freedom, responsibility and challenges in the production of self-care"; 4) "The daily work of Nursing and the challenges of caring for oneself: The health of the worker in focus", 5) "Care of self: institutional challenge to Workers' Health." The results revealed that the nurses presented difficulties to talk about themselves, but they were characterized as "home" and "quiet" people, having as entertainment activities with family and friends. The practice of physical activities integrates part of the daily life of these professionals, although for some it is not routine. Self-care goes beyond caring for health, body, disease and the world, or the famous check up. Carelessness is evidenced by the reduced or lack of care with you, such as a balanced diet, physical activity and leisure, medical monitoring or testing. The research acknowledged the importance of the subjectivity of care in relation to the work process and how it impacts on it, since the work of nursing can affect self care and self care and, at the same time, impose barriers in the daily demands of work and / or social life. There is a need for humanized listening, for people-centered management, for team appreciation, and for fostering dialogue and recognition.
