Mucosa labial como sítio alternativo para monitoração da glicemia de cães domésticos no transcirúrgico.

Blood glucose (BG) is an important parameter for the establishment of many vital diagnostic and therapeutic decisions in veterinary medicine. BG has been used for monitoring patients with endocrine diseases, obese and / or anorexic animals, hospitalized or intoxicated patients, or for those in emergency procedures or who are being submitted to surgical procedures. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical value and the accuracy of BG measurements obtained from labial mucosa as an alternative sample site during the transsurgical period. Blood samples were obtained from jugular vein to determined BG by Trinder laboratorial method (enzimatic colorimetric) and from auricular pina and labial mucosa to determined BG using glucometer from 24 healthy canines. Even mean BG performed by enzymatic colorimetric method was significantly higher than those measured by the glucometer, all measurements remained within the normal range for the canine and no difference was observed among the glucometer's BG at the various sites tested. In addition, all of the measurements fit into the zones considered clinically acceptable (A and B) when assessed by Parkes' error grid (2000). In face of these results, this study pointed to labial mucosa as an excellent and relevant sampling site for glycemic control in healthy dogs submitted to surgical procedures, showing as an promising site for BG measurements also in diabetic animals.
