Avaliação da relação cabeça da mandíbula/fossa mandibular, qualidade de vida e índices nutricionais, em indivíduos edêntulos, antes e depois da instalação de próteses totais

Edentulism is considered one of the worst harm to oral health and may impact on the masticatory function, phonetics, nutritional order losses, esthetic, with direct effects on their psychological condition and hence on the quality of life. Due to the loss of all dental elements, one of the changes is the loss of the Occlusal Vertical Dimension, which usually accompanies some change in the relationship the mandibular head and mandibular fossa. In this context, the objective of this study was to investigate whether prosthetic rehabilitation promoted changes in the quality of life, nutritional status and condylar position in edentulous individuals, quantifying the possible variations in the relation between mandibular head and mandibular fossa. The study consisted of twelve volunteer adult edentulous individuals without any full dentures. The research consisted of twelve edentulous volunteer adults devoid of any dentures. The Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) questionnaire was used to evaluate the impact of the oral condition on quality of life, the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) associated with Laboratory tests to investigate the nutritional status and computed tomography, in the resting position, to quantify the distance between the mandible head and the mandibular fossa, in the phases before and after the use of total dentures. The data collected were statistically analyzed using the Student's t-test at the 5% level of significance. It was verified that there was a statistically significant difference (p <0.05) in the quality of life related to oral health and in items of the blood test such as: Glycemia, total iron binding capacity, transferrin saturation index, hemocytes count, hemoglobin and hematocrit. However, no statistical differences were found in MNA and in the distance between the head mandible and mandibular fossa before and after prosthetic rehabilitation (p> 0.05). It can be concluded that the use of total prostheses caused an improvement in the quality of life and in some nutritional indexes of edentulous patients; However, there were no significant discrepancies in the relationship between the mandible head and the mandibular fossa, after rehabilitation.
