In this work, we seek to identify the presence of the concept of the arbitrariness of the sign linguistic, according to the conception of Ferdinand Saussure, in the manuscript De l'essence double du langage. The choice of this concept is justified due to its importance in theory which, as De Mauro ([1972]2018) rightly points out, is essential for the functioning of the other proposals, as linguistic value. Furthermore, the importance of this manuscript is also considered as an autograph source of Saussurian General Linguistics. To carry out this analysis, We read the manuscript, taking into account the concept of arbitrariness presented in the General Linguistics Course [1916]2006), as well as some works on the manuscript already carried out by other researchers. From these readings, we consider that This concept is not presented clearly and is found in the margin of the manuscript. Like this, we believe that the erasure of the concept in the manuscript can be understood by through two initial hypotheses: i) the posteriority of the analysis of the vertical relationship of the language; ii) the influence of the manuscript’s interlocution. Based on these proposals, we consider that it is possible to state that, as Silveira (2007, 2022a) assesses, a manuscript is capable of reveal a specific moment in the development of the theory, and that, based on this premise, the peculiar appearance of the concept of arbitrariness in De l'essence double du langage may be clarified.
