Resumo: | Objective: To verify the association between type of delivery and breastfeeding (BF) in the hospital environment. Methods: Cross-sectional study carried out in two public hospitals and a private hospital in Uberlândia - MG. A questionnaire was applied to 384 puerperal women, addressing sociodemographic, gestational data, type of delivery, BF in the first hour (AM1h) and whether the baby was in exclusive BF (EBF). The comparison between health characteristics of puerperal women according to the type of hospital, the type of delivery and the frequency of EBF and AM1h using the chi-square test. Results: The frequency of AM1h and EBF was 45.9% and 66.4%, respectively, in public hospital 1, 40.3% and 77.0% in public hospital 2 and 54.3% and 59.7% in the private hospital. The frequency of cesarean sections was 61.0% in the public hospital 1, 45.4% in the public hospital 2 and 98.2% in the private hospital. The frequency of EBF in the hospital environment was lower among women who underwent cesarean section (64.4% vs 79.9%). Having received information about BF in prenatal care (PN) had a positive influence on BF1. Conclusion: The frequency of EBF was lower among the puerperal women who underwent cesarean section and the AM1h was higher among the puerperal women who received guidance on BF in the PN.
